The SU 1500 Variant lathe is a machine with automatic cycle control, equipped with a Heidenhain control system.

The feed drive for the longitudinal axis (Z-axis) is provided by a servo drive directly to the ball screw. The cross-feed drive (X-axis) is also provided by a servo drive directly to the ball screw.
