The 216 HDS offered space for up to 16 rows of seats. In comparison, the underfloor cockpit variant provided more interior space. With the Setra SG 221 HDS, Kässbohrer had a vision, but due to the ban on running articulated touring coaches through France, they shifted focus in favor of solo vehicles.
